Session 2: Transformational Youth Ministry

What are the differences and similarities in the process of transformation for students and adults?

THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT CHAOS

Children see spiritual things mainly in black and white, but as they pass through adolescence they begin to perceive in Technicolor.

Healthy adolescents shift from a spiritual understanding that is received to an understanding that is believed.

CREATING A TRANSFORMATIONAL YOUTH MINISTRY

RESPONDING SKILLS

VICTORY or SUCCESS

  • Uncover the story.
  • Celebrate with others.
  • Connect it to God.

FAILURE or PAIN

  • Come alongside them.
  • Show empathy not sympathy.
  • Bring hope and help.

INITIATING STRATEGIES

REFRAMING EXPERIENCES

  • Changing their environment.
  • Altering their perspective.
  • Diversifying their relationships.

COMMUNITY

  • Pursue intentional relationships.
  • Ensure emotional and relational safety.
  • Invest time.

Community takes time, and takes place over time.

Remember: We don’t transform anyone God does!

A primary way God does this transformation work is scripture.
