Session 3:  Successful Response Strategies Bringing Hope and Healing to Students

Case Study Discussion

  • What emotions are you feeling as you hear the letter?
  • What words would describe how she is feeling?
  • Is she a victim or a chooser?

Remember Jesus' response

He loves kids as they are but...

He refuses to leave them as they are

L.I.V.E.

  1. Listen
  2. Invest
  • Investment always involves risk.
  1. Validate Hurting Kids
    • Validate student as a person
    • Validate student's emotions
  2. Explore the options

What is the real problem (beyond the presenting problem)?

What are some of the barriers?

Who else needs to be involved in the solution?

What steps need to be taken?

Special Instructions for the 21st Century Shepherd

  1. Confidentiality

Don't promise confidentiality;

When Kids say -

"You've got to promise not to tell anyone"

DON'T PROMISE

Instead...

Acknowledge the obvious seriousness of what they want to tell you

Affirm the trust they have shown

Assure them you won't tell without talking to them first and then only if your care for them or the law leaves you with no choice
